Male Telogen Effluvium Study!

I am a 21 year old male and I have suffered through a serious telogen effluvium. the only correlation though is I believe it has been a spring board for aga. I have read and researched so many young males who have suffered through this only creating rapid thinning and increasing us through the norwood scale much quicker then we'd like. just 7 months ago i had a full head of hair perfect when wet and everything and now when dry you can see thinning all along the front as well as just a ridiculous amount of thinning throughout the scalp. i was wondering because i have never once read or heard about a male with just a simple case of te and then full recovery. it happens in females all the time, it's read about and published. But in males im beginning to think te is related to aga and is only a spring board for what i've mentioned earlier.please if u know of yourself or any other males who have had a tea dn recovered, let me know about it; their pattern of baldness, etc.. cause one thing seems to be clear aga in males is much more understood but telogen effluvium in males is poorly understood and frankily im beginning to wonder if it even exists at all

TE

Hey man I know what you mean about this TE confusion. I am also a 21 yr old male that has been going through TE? for about 1 1/2yr now. My hair loss was due to stress and dieting I believe. Anyway, I know it's hard not to worry about this sudden hairloss at such a young age but worrying about it definetly wont help it grow back. Recently I am noticing thin whiteish hairs along myreceding hairline (which I never had until TE). Though these hairs are so light that they aren't notice until you go up close to it. My whole scalp including my sides and sideburns are thin and lifeless. I hope one day this all will reverse. I mean I'm still young plus both sides of my family have a full set of hair (wierd). As for you question of recovery, I am not sure what the percentage of people who do recover? If you go to a dermatologist, you should ask him that question! Let me know whats going on.

I FEEL YOUR PAIN

I am a 22 year old male going through the same thing. I have been to three Dermatologists regarding my sudden hair loss which began about 5 months ago. My first trip to the dermatologist resulted in a biopsy being taken and being diagnosed with male pattern baldness. But then when I went to a hair specialist, I was told that the hair loss pattern resembled TE. And after further evaluation by the specialist, I was diagnosed with TE. Yes it is hard to distinguish a difference between TE and MPB in men, but TE does effect men.
I was stressing out about my hair loss which made it even worse. But after some talking with my specialist, I have stopped over-worrying about it and in the past 3 weeks, the shedding has slowed down dramatically. Just try to calm down about it. Read up on Telogen Effluvium for your own knowledge on the condition, especially before going to a specialist. Just for the sake of understanding the condition if the doctor talks to you about it. It doesn't hurt to have a biopsy done.

About having a biopsy done: I emailed a few college professors and doctors with questions on biopsies with MPB and TE. I was informed that some biopsy tests may reveal MPB for men, but not all are 100% reliable. Hair follicles and hair strands in all men may have characteristics of MPB, even though the men may not be going bald. And sometimes when a male is diagnosed with MPB when it may really be TE. So if you have a biopsy done and they tell you MPB, get a second opinion from a hair specialist. It may be expensive but it will be relieving to get an opinion and advice from someone who deals with and knows a lot about hair loss. Good luck!

possible good news!

The last response at least can give us all some hope who believe we may be suffering from a rare case of male telogen effluvium. Their are alot of unexpalined things in this world and some cannot be explained. I finally after 7 months of rapid shedding as i discussed earlier decided to shave my head down to a 1. i got some encouraging news when i saw that my hairline had not changed and that their were no signs of any missing hair anywhere. I mean since i've been shedding like a dog the last 6 months you'd think that i would have had at least some change as was evident when i had longer hair by tons of hairs in the telogen phase and much shorter all throughout my head in a diffuse pattern. this at least gives me peace of mind. please continue sharing expereiences for those who enter this particular page. thanks alot.

I'm female but do believe men can go through bouts of TE. I've been shedding for over a year and still look like I have a normal amount of hair. So, if you do indeed have TE, just think that new hairs may be coming up unnoticed.

I too was diagnosed with TE this past summer. My hair is completely screwed up and I now have an anxiety disorder all thanks to this crap. My shedding stopped a few months ago, after it was brought on by severe panic/anxiety attacks for months on end over stress at work and graduating college somewhere around June or July and miraculously I still have a pretty thick head of hair. My main concerns come when I get out of the shower or as my hair is semi-wet and still drying. It doesnt feel like the hair I have been used to all my life. Its dead like and feels more like straw then hair.. As its drying you can see lifeless hairs just springing up all over the place.

As more and more time passes by without seeing the texture change and although I am not shedding, I dont really see much new growth I am beginning to wonder if TE is a catalyst for MPB. It makes scary sense when I think about it, that what I have done is sent perfectly normal hairs that would still be in the anagen stage for years to come right into telogen phase. This causes the new hair that grows to grow back thinner, as it would have years from now if I had shed that hair naturally. No matter who you are, your hair will thin as you age. I cant believe I am dealing with this at the age of 23 with two parents who have full heads of hair. Its brutally unfair to see friends whose fathers are completely bald and who have a thicker head of hair than I do now.

I have also lost hair on the sides to where I definately have a receding hair line. And yet somehow I still have a very thick head of hair. It just makes no sense that I am dealing with this. The more time goes by, the more I lost the hope that my hair cycle will start producing new hair again.

Telogen Eff.

Hi ,
In the Beginning of this year I was on Accutane and aside from that I had moved away from home. Suddenly on or about February I started shedding a lot of hair, my bathroom floor was full of hairs. I kept shedding. Now it's December and shedding has stopped. My hair is now back to normal but there are still some spots in my scalp which aren't as thick as they used to be and I can still see my scalp somewhat. Especially the crown. Now is my hair ever going back to normal? Like how it was before?

Worried.

Me too

I'm a 19 year old male with a family hostory of AGA. In September 2004 I was told by my doctor that I had TE and not to worry that my hair would grow back. On the crown of my head I had a rather large baldspot, less than 4 months later nearly all the hair on the crown of my head has regrown.

In recent weeks I have noticed those cursed little white hairs along my hairline and a general thinning on points near my temples. Classic receding hairline. I have read that nearly all males coming out of adolescence experience a slight nip at their hairlines. This seems a little excessive for that Confused
