hi
Hi
I am a final year photography student at Nottingham Trent University and I am currently researching issues relating to Alopecia, for my final show. I have a friend who I met in America in 2001 who has complete alopecia and she has inspired me to use my final show raise awareness about the condition. alopecia is something that the general public does not understand, they think that you are on chemo-therapy, they do not understand the condition and therefore they are curious of the visual aspect.
My friend found it really difficult when she lost her hair, she says she lost part of her identity, people no longer treated her the same and became almost scared of her. I have found so far in my research that this is seems to be a normal experience of someone with alopecia.
I believe that the more people who understand the condition the better, she has no hair but surely this shouldn't determine how people perceive her as a person.
I want to create a photographic exhibition that is called, "Bald is beautiful" I want these photographs to show the whole person, their personality and their characteristics, by photographing them in their own surroundings, doing everyday things. The aim is to allow the public to see past the condition and see the person. Whilst bringing awareness and understanding.
I am looking for people of all ages who have of Alopecia of varying
degrees,
to allow me to talk to them about their experiences of Alopecia. If you
feel that you would like to take part in my photographic exhibition then I would like to take some portrait photographs of you in your own surroundings.I will print you your own copy of the photograph in return for your help.
My exhibition will be showing in Bridle Smith Gate Gallery which is within Waterstones in Nottingham city centre between the 20th and the 31st May.
i hope to hear from you soon,
jo
