Teen hair loss
I have a friend that has a teen daughter that has a significant amount of hair loss. This is very traumatic for the child and the mother. Are there any support groups or pen pals of the same ailment that she can get in contact with? She feels very alone and is always made fun of at school. I would appreciate any information you could give me.

The National Alopecia Areata Foundation is geared to Kids and adults with AA hair loss. However, I know their local support groups sometimes include people with other forms of hair loss. NAAF may also suggest pen pals. Teen hair loss
Teen Hair loss also needs to include factors such as special attention to polycystic ovarian symptom, which typically begins at menarche (a disorder emcompassing many endocrine problems, including irregular (not 28-day cycle) menses, but which, collectively, may result in scalp hair loss. Other factors.......diet (sufficient protein), crash diets, cosmetics, ie........hair processing (colors/straightening/bleaches/permament waving etc) plus medications need special assessment prior to any diagnosis for alopecia. Teen hair loss
Can pulling your hair back into a pony tail tightly, cause your hairline to recede?

I am a 19 yr old college student and for the past 3 weeks or so, Ive experienced excessive hair loss. Not the average amount of hair that falls out daily, but a brushfull in about a week. I haven't been experiencing any overwhelming stress, or been overly dying my hair, and I have semi-normal menstral cyles. What could be the cause of this? Is there anything that I should do, or shouldn't do? Should I seek a physician's opinion?

If it concerns you you should seek professional opinion. However, if you don't have actual hair loss you may find the docs don't take you seriously. Hair shedding can vary significantly but high rates of hair shedding do not automatically lead to hair loss. There can be an equally rapid hair regrowth so the result can be no net hair loss. You are leaving the teen years behind when hormone effects can be dominant. As the body adjusts to adulthood you may see changes in hair growth. _________________ Kevin - The management - keratin.com
