too much bleaching
hello there:
this past summer i did something really stupid and i'm afriad i'm paying the price now: i've always had really thick, really dark hair. a couple months ago, i had a friend of mine bleach my hair several times in order to get it light enough to dye it using different color temporary dyes. it burnt a little, but not terribly. for several months i had bright purple hair. well, my hair was short, so it eventually grew out and the dyed part has since been cut away. however, over the past few months i have noticed a severe thinning of my hair. every time i shower and shampoo and rinse my hair, it comes out in more than normal amounts (i know that some daily loss is expected, but this seems abnormal). also, my pillow has, over the past couple months, been covered with hair. the hair that falls out comes complete with the little bulb at the end. i'm terribly afraid that i've suffered some harsh chemical burn that has permanently thinned my hair and that i'm going to lose it all. this was several months ago, and my hair is still falling out at the root. has anyone experienced this? is this a termporary loss? will is eventually stop falling out? will my hair eventually come in the way it used to grow? i'm ill with worry.
thank you so much for listening and i eagerly await any information.

Re: Hair Loss
quote: Originally posted by Tdn29I think stress is a huge culprit. I have recently experienced much more than usual hair loss in the past 6 mths. (always had a bit of shedding but it's more than usual) I was under a great deal of stress (company layoffs and such in which i survived but still stressed out off and on) - i've never had "commercial" hair anyway..but it's definitely worse and hard to fix being i have less hair. I have not even used any hair dyes..nothing. the only thing i did do was neglect nutrition/exercise and turned to excess alcohol use which made things worse. My scalp got really really dry/tight feeling and felt irritated. I went to a dermantologist who diagnosed me with seborrheic dermatitis however I'm not convinced since i've never even had dandruff before and never had oily hair. I used the recommended shampoo which seemed harsh and irriated my scalp even more and in turn caused more strands to come out. full strands too, not breakage. I'm going to get a 2nd opinion next week.
I think the best option for me at this time is a mild shampoo, no blow dryers, letting it air dry - losts of conditioners and leave in condtioners that do not contain protein as that can be drying, stress relief (somehow since the hair loss is causing more of that), a healthy lifestyle, and time.

**
to add on this later (much later) - i ended up going to 2 additional dermantogists after that last one and my diagnosis was "telogen effluvium" per the last two. (Just to let anyone know who may have similar symptoms) - i also have a dry scalp which can mimic symptoms of seb. dermantitis so when in doubt of a diagnosis, always get another opinion!! The shampoos prescriped for me only made my dry scalp problem "worse" by further irritating my scalp and increasing my hair loss (from what it appeared to me) - my hair felt like straw after using those shampoos and i had no natural oil coming from my scalp - so it seemed. my hair loss was to a point of clumping out here and there and my scalp felt horrible. after 2 other dermantologists and a scalp biopsy to confirm...it was pretty conclusive i had full blown telogen effluvium - stress probably was the primary cause, the dry scalp secondary in not helping the weakened hair that was left. (it was dry, in a delicate state and easy to break) - after much time using "gentle" shampoos, getting more hair than i wanted cut off } - eating better, exercise!!!! (vital for me/circulation) - vitamins, scalp massages, lots of water...(drinking alcohol "less" - lol - i'm not perfect!) - i am no longer clumping.....i still shed more than normal for "me" but i'm very hopeful that this is turning around. the only cure for telogen effluvium is ...time, patience. i feel very hopeful just because my scalp in itself feels *much* better.

Help me please!!!
i have been dying and occasionally highlighting my hair for about 6 years, but never have I experienced a problem like this. I used a dye that turned my hair too dark, so I decided to use hair color remover(sold at drugstores) to remove the color so I could then re dye it. I did everything the box instructed me to do and my hair came out a frightening shade of orange blond which was to be expected. The next day I used a medium brown dye to color my hair. The dying process took a while because my hair is long and absorbs color quickly. As I was finishing covering any other bright orange spots, my scalp started burning. At first it was just a sensation, but it quickly became intensified. It was burning so bad I had to wash it out. As I washed it out, abnormal amounts of strands of hair seemed to be coming out with it. I started to freak out, assuming that I was losing all my hair. However after my hair dried , everything seemed almost normal. My scalp had no bald spots and my hair was soft and shiny. My scalp still hurt slightly. However, my hair (which is naturally medium to dark brown) is a very light blondish, brownish mix of tones. It looks ok for now but it's obvious that my hair didn't absorb too much color and I'm afraid that the more I wash it, the more dye will rinse out and the closer my hair will become to looking like that horrid orange blonde again. Please help me. I need to know exactly what happened to my hair and if my hair starts to turn orange again, would it be safe to use a semi-permanent color?

HAIR LOSS AND BREAKAGE CAUSED BY HAIR COLOR
MY HAIR IS NATURALLY DARK BROWN. I JUST TURNED 18 AND I NOTICED I HAVE SOME GRAY HAIRS. I DECIDED TO COLOR IT WITH CLAIROL NATURAL INSTINCTS SEMI-permanent 28 WASH DARK BROWN. I HAVE USED THE PRODUCT AT LEAST TEN TIMES , A FEW YEARS AGO, AND MY HAIR CAME OUT GREAT. THIS TIME I USED IT AND MY HAIR IS FALLING OUT FROM THE ROOT, AND HALF HAS BROKEN OFF VERY SHORT, AND SOME IS STILL LONG. ABOUT 2 OR 3 MINUTES AFTER I PUT ON MY HAIR, IT STARTED TO STING AND BURN. I THOUGHT IT WAS NORMAL, SO I LEFT IT ON. WILL MY HAIR KEEP BREAKING AND FALLING OUT? WILL IT EVER BE THICK AND NORMAL AGAIN? AND WILL THIS HAIR COLOR EVER FADE BACK TO MY NATURAL COLOR? HOW LONG WILL IT TAKE BEFORE IT FADES OFF completely, BECAUSE I'M TRYING TO GROW MY HAIR LONG, AND I DON'T WANT TO DYE THE ROOTS TO MATCH MY HAIR. PLEASE RESPOND QUICKLY, I'M HAVING A NERVOUS BREAKDOWN OVER MY HAIR.

Shampoos
I have found that shampoos with the silk protein make my hair fall out. I don't know what it is, but I use it, and slowly but surely, my hair begins to fall out. I stear clear of it, and as said above, I purchase better shampoos and conditioners from hair salons and places such as Trade Secret.

Re: Losing my hair
quote: Originally posted by scaredHi,
I recently got married a month ago. I moved to a different city after marriage. But I have started to lose my hair since then. Everytime I shower, I lose a ton of hair! And every time I brush my hair I lose a lot too. I am just shedding like crazy! Please help!!!!!!! What should I do? What could be causing it? We have really soft water at our house and maybe that the reason. But No one else in the house is experiencing the hair loss. I am using Pantene Pro V Shampoo and conditioner. Could that be it?
Please advise........
Hi! I hope you are trying new hair products. Throw away that Pantene, girl! My hair is still shedding badly from using Pantene. I used for about 4 months and my hair starting falling out in handfuls while brushing or washing. I called my doctor's office because I was freaking out. My nurse had the same experience using Pantene. Go to your local hair salon and tell them what happened. I have been using some deep conditioning product for the past 2 weeks and my hair loss is finally slowing down. Hopefully I'll be back to normal soon and you too!
Best of luck!
