hair loss and pot
OK, I was so excited to see this post! I've been trying to tell people that I think the cause of my hair thinning is a result of smoking pot. I've only been smoking regularly (off and on) for about a total of 5 years. I have now stopped. I used to smoke everyday, then it was only on the weekends. I had quit solid for a month, then caved in and took a hit. Then I started wanting it more, so I have been occasionally giving in. And whenever I do, I notice for the following week, more hair than usual will come out in the shower. So much to the point that I start crying. My BF smokes and doesn't think the pot is the cause.
But what I would like to know from those of you who posted that you thought the same thing-what is your diet like? Since I'm obsessed for finding a reason why I no longer have a full head of thick hair, I've been trying to read up as much as I can. And I just found some info linking iron deficiency and hair loss. And since I have drastically cut down, even stopped for a while-eating meat, which is the best way to get iron. I'm curious to know what other people's diets are like. Thanks!

Hey
I would just like to add to this topic, I do not smoke, but i have gone through short phases in life were i have smoked pot, 1 was when i was 17 and i developed alopecia and restored after stopping pot, am now 27 i have had alopecia again for the past year and half i have also smoked pot a year a go on and off for a month or two and i must say its at that point my hair did start to thin!! and as i know i have the alopecia gene pot has most probably triggered it again!!, i believe its the hydro weed ppl smoke now days, its not normal weed, weed has been taken to another level i don't touch the stuff anymore or wouldn't recommend anyone to smoke that crap, its ok if your on holiday and you have a joint or two but do not smoke it all the time, its not good for you in anyway, studies show it leads to mental illness and numerous health problems
I now drink green tea which is helping my hair restore and i use essential oils to help.
weed has become the evil herb now, just because its a herb does not make it any safe, its dangerous and causes too many illnesses, am a body builder and of course something like that is not gonna be part of my diet, but please do not be stupid and smoke that crap, i regret smoking that stuff, stick to alcohol a better option and throw the weed away, its rubbish, grown under a lamp most of it, hash is crap its made from glue, boot polish and god knows what other crap, be wise ppl!!!

Re: Hey
Wow, I am sorry your experience with pot has not been a pleasant one, but the statement "stick to alcohol a better option" is a false one. First off, your comment about mental illness has been proven untrue by recent scientific evidence.
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/health/4286435.stm
"Scientists showed a synthetic version of the compound may reduce inflammation associated with Alzheimer's and thus help to prevent mental decline."
All effects of pot are temporary, no matter what the drug companies or the government tells you. The same statement cannot be made about alcohol. Heres a good web site for unbiased information about the real effects of marijuana.
http://www.drugpolicy.org/marijuana/factsmyths/
Analyzes all the scientific studies done on marijuana.
Even though your comment was a little more than a rant, one statement does ring true. "i believe its the hydro weed ppl smoke now days". Anyone who has grown pot hydroponicly knows the ridiculous amount of chemicals you pump into the plant. When you grow hydroponicly the plant gets all its nutrients from chemicals instead of soil, therefore when you smoke hydroponic pot you are bringing all those artificial chemicals into your body. When I visited the cannabis college in Amsterdam recently I learned that by smoking only organically grown pot you can eliminate many side effects, not sure about hair loss but its worth a shot if you are able to grow your own.
On to hair loss, I am 24 years old and have experienced some hair loss in the past year, I have been smoking pot since 16. Marijuana can have a temporary effect on hormones, as can alcohol, and a hormone imbalance can cause you to loose your hair; however if you are not predisposed to hair loss you would not have a problem. Several of my friends smoke regularly and have no problems with hair loss. I've also smoked with several guys in their 50s who have been smoking for 30+ years and have no more problems with hair loss than most people in their 50s. However, this could be from staying away from hydroponicly grown pot, that is my theory at least.
So, in conclusion, if you can stop smoking pot, fantastic, but please don't replace pot with alcohol as b_dave suggests.

This is True!
I started smoking after high school when I never thought I'd do it and sort of never found the drug interesting. But then I got hooked on hydro stuff and I didn't notice at first but after 5 months my frontal vertex started receding. I started freaking about all the hairs I would lose, I always had thick hair, but then after 5 months of doing it every time i ran my fingers through my hair 5-7 hairs would get stuck to my fingers, I freaked out, started crying and stuff because I was young and losing a lot of hair. I wouldn't mind having a little hair loss in later 20s or early 30s but in the earlier 20s it was messed up to me.
So I quit for 5 months, hair felt 'tighter' to scalp, less hairs falling out.
Then I caved in again for a month and the hair loss occurred again at a more dramatic rate. I noticed that smaller shorter hairs about 1inch thick were falling out (they must've grown in the period when I quit, so perhaps there is 'restorative hope' to a degree) and again I was losing hairs at a rapid rate when I'd shower and stuff.
Now I've noticed friends who smoke all the time they have receding hairlines and thin oily hair. A lot of people make a perception that it doesn't cause hair loss b/c their friends have long hair, but a lot of the time a lot of them just don't have shorter hair styles, the hair is still thinner even if it's 'longer'.
Based upon these experiences and this forum and other internet resources I'm quitting for good. When I quit I didn't even care, I felt it was pointless to do it. Having a full head of hair is worth more than any stupid high there is.
Don't sit around and wonder if you're going to stop caring about life or deal with problems without it. Use creativity, if your job sucks work your ass out of it, if you're bored find and do something to do that is new, try new things, there are unlimited experiences to be had without pot.

pot & hair loss
OF COURSE POT OR any smoke inhaled into the lungs affects hair loss. We have a hair loss clinic in southern california with research and clinical trials conducted over the course of 15 years via a cosmetologist, a cosmetic chemist and a trichologist. With a brand new web site being introduced in 2 weeks....stay tuned for a brand NEW PROGRAM . . .
Each and every strand of hair comes from a hair follicle, which you might term the "root", its under the scalp and where the hair is actually "alive".....the follicle (root) is fed by BLOOD from the body, blood is what gives it...its strength and its food in order for it to grow and regrow as every hair does......
When a body is smoking...ANYTHING.....it is robbed of oxygen....A body robbed of oxygen, does not work the same - - it has blood that is robbed of oxygen . - - -which makes THAT blood weak and not work as well - - - that blood is what FEEDS that hair follicle.....feeding the hair follicle is what produces the hair strand and keeps it growing and enables the follicle to re-grow the hair strand after it sheds ( as every single hair does).
Robbing the blood of oxygen...of course will rob the follicle and eliminate hairs from regrowing once shed, some will grow back and some won't. less and less will grow back on individuals that smoke tobacco and even more so on individuals that smoke Pot. Taking a hit of Pot feels like someone has burned the inside of your lungs, so that indicates to most that Marijuana smoke is worse than tobacco smoke. There fore the casualties are worse. Its only logical the only ones that do not agree with this are the ones that smoke dope. They are in denial, as most addicts are.
Remember. . .why do you think they call it dope?
If you want your hair to stay on your head, do not smoke .............anything.

Wow, it has been 2 years since I posted my last reply, and was very happy to see the responses. It all clicked for me when I read others say that they're losing their hair in the frontal vertex, because that is exactly where mine is thinning, and also from underneath too, which is more recent. I have also just recently went off the Pill. My hair falls out so easily, and it's very dry and easily breakable. I also see the "bulb" if you will, at the end of the hair. I also have thin, short hairs falling out as well. So scary and frustrating, makes me cry and freak out! The other crucial comment was about hydroponic pot, which is all I've been smoking since I met my husband. Makes sense! I guess I should have done my research, b/c I never actually knew that they use chemicals to grow it. I also color my hair and have been for the past 12 years, but I'm sorry, that's one thing I don't want to stop. The smoking however, I want to do, especially now that I'm becoming a personal trainer. All the more reason to be that much more healthier. Thanks to all who enlightened me! Now I just need to know the best route to take to start to regrow. Any suggestions?

marijuana and hair loss
After smoking pot 23 years I quit 13 months ago when I lost my job. Now I can see that my hair is starting to come back. I use rogain for 5 years with no results (I grew more hair in, after I stop using the stuff). I have been using rosemary, jojoba oil, with the best results. Saw Pamoleto, for 4 months twice a week (but started to grow womens breats!) so I stopped. I also use almond oil and deluxe hair grow. I don't think it will grow back overnight, since I lost my hair over a long period of time. So 23 years, lets say 2 years and 3 months to make a real differents. I never thought I live to say "I don't need pot" but now I don't, and my hair coming back really makes me not want to touch the stuff, and now I need to watch my money more then ever.

newb hair loss pot quit
hey guys, i am glad to see this post. Still not sure if theirs a relation between my starting frontal hair loss and weed smoking but heres my story, im taking pics once a week to catalog the progress.
im 24 and have been smoking for about 10 years now. A few months after noticing my hair loss and on a day where i had a bunch of stress going on i broke down and every little problem felt masive world ending, i was reaching for my bubbler when i decided it wasnt doing anything but making things worse. I quit right then, cold turkey. And i must stay weed isnt that addictive if after 10 years of 3-8x daily use i can quit with just a few sleepless nights and a sour stomach for a week or two.
Anyways its been almost a month, i havnt really noticed anything.. no regrowth and i think some new hairs are getting that whispy look to them in the front. But maybe not enough time has passed. I have clouded the test a bit by taking a vitamin b complex, working out a lot more, eating a lot more protein and a lot less overall food. But if this stops or starts to reverse the problem before i start taking any kind of medication then i think its proof that weed (for me) was helping in my hair loss or at least causing the mental (almost bipolar) imbalance that hopefull is whats causing this.
Whats strange is it seems to be a lot farther along on one side of my head vs the other. The vertex is more "cut into" on my right side and when looking head on i can see almost all the way through on my right side... but its not that obvious.
I have been taking pics as i mentioned, my brother brought this up so i wasnt constantly obsessing over this and noticing things that werent their... although i still do. And last night did something VERY stupid. Both sides of my head have that cut in look the vertex going back but the front-center of my head was still all the way there but lately it was getting whispy and the left side was a little fuller then the right which looked apparent to me... so i buzzed it off hoping maybe the hair would grow back stronger or i at least wouldnt have those whispy hairs that cant seem to support their own weight (especially when wet) . Now it looks so damn strange to me, i have the black roots showing it looks like a 5'oclock shadow right below my hair. If youre going to shave off those tiny whispy hairs thats one thing but definetly dont shave weakened hair that is as long as your existing hair (no brainer for some people.)
Anyways good luck to everyone with the quitting weed, even if it doesnt help with hair loss if youre a long time smoker like me you will most likely appreciate the benefits of quitting smoking like less anxiety, a balance of your mood and maybe more energy and a more positive outlook on things.
good luck everyone.
