There are different causes of folliculitis and some are more serious than others. Some investigation to find out what exactly is going on is required. If there is a significant pustular component to the folliculitis your doc should be making bacterial cultures to find out the nature of any infective agent. Depending on the exact nature of the folliculitis a different treatment may be required. Oral antibiotics are the standard approach. Depending on the nature of the folliculitis such thing as rifampicin, topical mupirocin, clindamycin, naproxen, Chlorhexidine, Gentamicins, and retinoids are used. Some publications report success in using combined rifampicin with clindamycin when folliculitis seems resistant to other treatment approaches. _________________ Kevin - The management - keratin.com

Thank you for responding to my Questions I'm going to look into the other drugs. I had a scalp sample done last year that came back folliculitis decalvelen ( Not sure if that is how you spell it at this moment) The doctor said I do not have that. But when you say infective agent...what kind of infective agents are there? I wash my hair every second day and always try to switch shampoos between days.Could it be something that is in my Body or in my home? I asked two weeks ago for my Doctor to do another test...His exact words where...it would not prove anything! And if it was the United States it could tell more!I really do not understand that at all...Canada should be just as good with these tests as the US.I believe that was just a way of saying NO.I have seen three doctors for these problems.Actually 4.This first guy 5 years ago blamed it on stress.Which I new was not correct .If he had of treated my problem serious then maybe I would not have been going through all this Hell ( forgive that word) for all these years. I understand what the other people are talking about when they post a message. And they end up seeing a few different doctors...they really Do not care and have little patience to find the exact cause for a females problems so they blame it on stress. And I will tell you hearing that over and over is very upsetting when you know your own body. I have decided to cut out Milk and also Cream in my coffee since bacteria can be in them.I think Im willing to try anything. Also drinking Wheat grass for last two weeks.I've read that Wheat grass can help to stop Bacteria.Don't know if this is true.I have even been putting a little on my scalp then washing off a few hours later. Do you know anything about wheat grass kevin?? Thanks Heather Heather

Try taking flaxseed oil and vitamin b5 (pantothenic acid). It helped me alot. I take 6 1000 mg capsules of flaxseed oil daily and 4 500 mg tablets of b5 - works almost as well as the antibiotics.

Has anyone mentioned that you need to treat your nose when dealing with folliculitis? Supposedly the bacteria or whatever causes the infection can live in your nose and so your nose should be treated while treating yourself for folliculitis so that it does not return. Ive read using bactroban or even bacitracin on the inside of your nose will help clear up recurrent/resistant infections in people with folliculitis. It will help keep you from reinfecting yourself. Ive also read it can take anywhere from 5 days to nearly a year for people to be clear of the bacteria in their nose. Nees to be done twice a day. I started this treatment yesterday and will be starting minocin once I get the order in the mail so it will be interesting to see if this whole regimine will "cure" me. Im sure willing to try it though.

Actually the simple fact that people sneeze, get runny noses, breathe and touch their faces cause the spread of bacteria. Lovely picture you paint though.

I have TE and I developed a serious case of folliculitis from the over use of Beta-Val Lotion.liquid. 0.1% (betamethasone Valerate)and Cormax Clobetasol Propionate 0.5mg. I used it to clear up seborrheic dermatitis on my scalp. It actually works. The problem is it comes back nastier and stronger each time and eventually the steroid gave me pustules and folliculitis! The Derm Dr Robert Friedman never told me that you were only suppose to use this in small drops and for only two weeks at a time. Even when I brought it to his attention he did not listen and said it was OK to use a lot of it as often as needed! Look at the Adverse reactions listed on the product information sheet. burning, itching, irritation, folliculitis, hypertrichosis, acneiform eruption, hypopigmentation, perioral dermatitis, maceration of the skin, skin atrophy straie, milliaria! My scalp also got the pustuals, folliculitis, my scalp was very tight and sore to the touch. It itched and burned terribly. I once thought I had awoke in a fireants nest! The Cormax solution even lists hair loss! These DERMS do not take their time to listen to you! Read up on these drugs before you use them and question question question until the doctor tells you to stop. I still after one year of TE have sore spots at my crown with flakes redness where the folliculitis used to be. To clear the folliculitis he gave me vioform cream. I used that for a couple of months with very little results. I asked him again if something else could be used instead and he gave me Gentamicin sulfate cream. It dried the zits up and groups of hairs started to fall out as the zits dried. THIS WAS HELL!! Now I read on this site that Gentamicin can cause hair loss!! MAN!
