Is kinked hair a "disease"?

Is it fair to call kinked/kinky hair a disease...or should I just describe it as an affliction or something?

I know what you mean! Don't some people have naturally kinky hair?!

Well I don't think mine's naturally kinky because it came through all black and gross - but yeah some people have naturally kinky or frizzy hair.

It's a fair question: is kinked hair a disease. For those who are born with it it is not - it is just genetics. But for those who develop kinked hair when they previously had straight hair it might be a disease (in professional circles it is called a syndrome - we don't go as far as calling it a disease). For some it is a disease because they say it is. For others it is not because they say it is not. Whether kinked hair is a problem depends largely on your own attitude towards it.

For those who develop kinked hair and it's not a genetic trait, it might be reveresed with treatments against androgens. For men that means Propecia and similar. For women, it may mean oral antiandrogens.

Thanks Kevin. Dr Robert M. Bernstein, M.D. from Hairlosshelp.com says it is a hereditary condition called pili torti. I haven't seen that term used anywhere on this site. It seems this problem is a real grey area in hairloss problems.

pili torti is something else entirely. there is info on that problem on this site. I know the site you're talking about and I often laugh at the so-called "expert" advice that guy gives.

kevin,
I'm confused . My hair turned kinky over the last few years.
My natural hair is very straight and soft. I have Never overprocessed my hair or used any chemicals (other than shampoo).
A few months back i discovered a pald patch at the back of my head. Nowadays i find a lot of thin short wispy hairs coming off my head.
I have been following up on the forums in the hope of finding answers.
I am trying not to scare myself into concluding that the kinked hairs are signs preceeding AGA. Does my bald patch speak other than what i am hoping against ? Are these tell-tale signs of AGA ,the kinked hairs combined with the bald patch ? i know you cannot diagnose over the net but i very very much need an opinion and hope to receive an answer.

My pili torti page is at; http://www.keratin.com/ag/ag009.shtml

Pili torti can be a part of kinked hair syndrome but it is not the cause. Pili torti is a description of the hair fibers. It can be a diagnosis in itself as in genetically inherited congenital pili torti, but it can also be a part of many other conditions as a secondary symptom. The web page lists a few.

I can't and don't diagnose conditions on the web. You really need to see a dermatologist and get a full examination. Having kinked hair does not necessarily mean you are going to develop AGA. It is quite possible to have kinked hair and no AGA development. Bald patches can be due to a variety of reasons and need not be linked to the kinked hair.

I have had very straight hair my entire life. In the past few years have developed a patch of very curly hair on the top portion of my head. Within the past year it has progressed to a lot of curly hair but only on the top of my head. My bangs and back of my hair are still very straight. In the past few months I've noticed hair loss. I even have a bald spot about the size of a dime right behind my bangs. I am a 29 year old female. ANY help or information anyone could send my way would be GREATLY appreciated. This is the only site I can find that seems to be of any help.
