Alopecia Areata
Hello; Try taking herbal supplements. I know most herb treatments get a bad rap, but at least give it a try if drugs like Rogaine don't seem to work for you. Try taking Reishi Mushroom extract, He Sho Wu & Dong Quai, and Nettle Root extract. Also you might want to try Shiitake & Maitake mushroom extract as well. Give these herbs at least 3-4 months before you see results.

You've received a lot of different forms of advice from people. In 2004, I was diagnosed with AA along with another disorder. I had patches all over my head and was scared and afraid and overly self-conscious. I went to my doctor had all the range of blood tests, and xrays and nothing came up except for my white blood cell count indicating that I had some sort of an infection. I had a major toothache and found a dentist and was referred to a derm as well. I was stressed, not eating well , and not taking the best care of myself. I began taking a multi-v, ended up having 2 root canals and getting my teeth fixed, and started taking better care of myself, and lo and behold regrowth was occuring. This is a frustrating disorder, there is no doubt about that, each individual is different has different causes and effects and different treatment. I opted out of shots because i'd read up on them, and while parts of my head had the sore spots i didn't want more, I opted to go the topical route with clobetasol. Now almost 4 years later, total regrowth has occurred, so don't lose hope. Just remember that like many things this disorder takes time. I don't believe that there is miracle cure to make it miraculously grow back, each individual is different so what may work for one might not for another. If you read through many of the posts there are a large # of different treatments, some natural, others medicinal talk to your derm about what might work for you . Good luck and have a happy holiday

I just wanted to share my story about this and my success.. I've have had AA for about 4 years and I'm 18 right now but within that 4 years i have lost all hair (alopecia universalis) and had a very hard time dealing with it. I realized though that I am actually lucky. I have a loving family, great health, and no other physical issues. There are things we can not control in our life and we MUST accept it and better our selves. Realize all the good in life and not the one bad. Love life for what it gives you. Since I have made piece with it, I have started working out reguarly, eating healthy and talking multi-vitamins reguraly. To my surprise my hair started regrowing. I went from 0% hair on my body to full eye brow regrowth, full eye lash regrowth on one side , and about 70% hair on my head regrowth. And for those who are familiar with alopecia universalis this is very very rare. I'm not saying this will happen to everyone who just believes and makes peace with AA. But just never give up and love what you got and you never know what will happen.

Hi Indiaan, sorry for taking so long to respond.
Updates:
I the bald spots on my head have been gone for almost a year now. I still have a small spot on my face near my chin, and I have a spot on my calf (6 months).
I have not taken any cortisone injections for about a year, and I have stopped using any cream.
I believe there were several key factors that have helped me during this time:
1.) growing my hair out. although I never thought id look good with long hair, i decided it would be better than shaving my head on a daily basis, or constantly worrying about people seeing my bald spots. Growing out my hair for 6 months helped me not be so self-conscious about my appearance, and its a lot easier to shrug off having really long hair, then explaining some wierd bald spot. It seemed like the longer my hair got, the less i had to worry about the problem, and i think that helped tremendously. it definitely was awkward growing out my hair, but after about 5 months, i learned how to manage with long hair, how to 'train' it & it became a part of me.
2.) removing stress from my life. it seems that the bald spots were at their worst when I had a great deal of stress in my life. having to add the additional stress of the bald spots only made it worse. If there is anything you can do to make your life less stressful, it is definitely the remedy i think that is working best for me. Of course, growing out my hair helped me manage that, but there are definitely other ways too.
Otherwise, i would stay in the sun, keep a normal diet, and please, find some way to manage your stress.
I know the baldspots will come again, but at least now i know how i can manage with it, and having short hair and self-pity wasnt the way to go. grow out those locks, and find some way to make peace with your new life.

i tried a laser comb for almost a year, i really don't see a difference, it all seems a big con, i think if anything did work then the top movie and music stars would have had it, people like elton john, john cleese, sean connery, but they all got hair pieces, i think also Micheal Jackson was supposingly bald, prob through drug taking and worry.... hair pieces can look ok.....i have gone for the option of trying not to worry about it any more, i know it knocks your ego, it bloody hurts, i know peoples pain, i think the only thing to do is keep your hair very short, dont try to hide it, bald guys look good when the scalp is shaved, wish we could sue the butts off these companys that sell duff lotions, pills and laser combs.....maybe one day they will find a way to get round baldness but i dont think its yet, maybe another 50 years, dont waste your hard ernt cash guys, keep it really short and get a nice all over tan and you will look a million dollars

MY BRO'S EXPERIENCE
My bro got 2 spots on his scalp some time back. He had to go through a terrible expereince especially when it was very visible with his short hair do.
After confirming that he has Alopecia Areata by doing a skin biopsy through a doctor, we both ran a search and managed to come across a treatment called nt spot baldness. After 3 weeks he managed to see some growth and after some time he has recovered completely.
You might want to take a look at it and most importantly do not give up hope.
