I've had scalp folliculitis for over 15 years, and am posting what has worked for me since I know how hard it can be to deal with this. I'm also posting the medicines that have had absolutely no effect.

By far, the best medicines for me have been a combination of Amoxicillin 250mg 3 times a day, Hibiclens wash of 5-7 minutes (really massaging my scalp as I use it) about 3 times a week, and alternating two foam medicines called Luxiq (which really helps with the itching and redness) and Evoclin foam. Evoclin has the same medicine as clindamycin gel, but the delivery mechanism is such much more effective because you are not dotting gel all over the place. I put a liberal amount throughout my scalp while my hair is still kind of wet after a shower.

I have also noticed you have to alternate every few months because the medicines really can lose their effectiveness. Another regimen I've found very effective is substituting an oral antibiotic called Omnicef 300mg once a day for the Amoxicillin, sbustituting Capitrol shampoo for the Hibiclens, and Metrogel cream for the clinamyclin in the Evoclin foam. Unfortunately, Metrogel is not delivered in the same foam as Luxiq and Evoclin. Using this regimen, I've had alot of help using a 3% salicylic acid hair shampoo (Eckerd's or CVS * brand) to help control the itching.

As a side note, for those of you that have had help with Nizoral shampoo for folliculitis, and are interested in the foam delivery method I mentioned for Luxiq and Evoclin, a company by the name of Connetics Corporation is developing a foam with the active ingredient of Nizoral, ketoconazole.

One more oral antibiotic that has had alot of benefit is Cipro. However, I've only had it twice in 15 years. I view it as something I know will work if everything else stops working.

Medicines that have had little effect on my scalp folliculitis are: Minocycline, Sumyacin, Nizoral, Zithromax, Keflex, Doxycycline, Carmol Shampoo.

Well I have folliculitus from having sex with a girl that I probably should have avoided. I am just glad I used a condom lol. Anyways, I was completely cured by a one two punch of zithromax and rocephrin. Both one time doses.

Then I had sex with her again a year later and got reinfected. So I am sitting here 2 days back from the doctor with a prescription of minocycline. I told him what knocked it out before, but he decided to give me this instead. I dont' know if i can continue to take this drug though as I think I am getting some of the severe side affects such as swelling around the eyes and difficutly concentrating + not sure but maybe some blurred vision too.

Last time I did this:

Just go to the hospital and say you are certain you were exposed to an std from unprotected sex (embarrassing I know, but worth it to get rid of this bastard disgusting nasty little bug)

One is a shot, and one is a heavy dose of about 4 pills. That knocked it out for me.

PS I have the kind that affects the body all over. I have it on my back, chest, scalp, face, legs and pubic area. Just about anywhere hair grows, even if you can't see the hair your body is covered in them. The only places without hair are your palms of your hands and soles of your feet.

Also very important, to wash all your clothing and bedding after getting treatment to prevent reinfection.

Minocycline makes me ill.

Ok Minocycline is no good for me, It drastically lowered my immune system and I have been sick for the last few days. On top of that it gave me a bad headache, I couldn't concentrate, and I had intermittent blurred vision. I also couldn't sleep at all.

So since my doc didn't do what I told him got rid of it before, I will be taking my own advice and making a trip to the hospital once again for the treatment that is a sure victory and doesn't make me sick.

As a side note I would like to add that the minocycline was also having a drastic effect on my folliculitus, I would take it still if it didn't make me ill.

Zithromax made it worse!

Yikes, ok that drug didn't work. I believe it killed off the competing organisms and gave the MRSA free range to attack me. Went back to the doctor and he prescribed me CEPHALEXIN. If this doesn't work we are going to culture and go from there.

Chelated zinc

Hi everyone
It might be worth trying zinc.
A year and a half ago, I came off my acne pill, Dianette, and after a few weeks I suffered a massive shed (which has now regrown), but also a kind of folliculitis (though this has never been confirmed by a dermatologist) with unbearable itching and small spots on the scalp. Also my acne returned badly.
In an effort to get rid of my acne, I started taking 45mg of zinc a day (which is quite a high dose), plus I went on a wheat-free diet, which I had heard can benefit acne.
My acne has now all but gone, and the scalp itching is now about 10% of what it used to be.
If you try this, make sure you get a zinc with 1mg of copper per 15mg of zinc, and also give it several weeks to really see if it works. I used chelated zinc (I had taken zinc citrate before and that had little effect). Also, take it after eating as it can cause nausea on an empty stomach.
Apparently 50% of the British population are deficient in zinc, which is required for healthy skin, so it makes sense that supplementing works.

I've had folliculitis for about 8 years and it seems to be spreading. Initially It only effected my shins but has slowly spread to my thighs, groin, arm pits and finally my abdomen and chest. I've recently noticed that when I comb my hair it falls out, but I don't have any bald patches yet. Anyway I Finally saw a private dermatologists 3 years ago and got a biopsy, the results were staphylococcus aureus, according to the analysis I received stains for fungi or bacteria were negative, I'm not to sure what that means. Unfortunately I run out of money and wasn't able to carrying on seeing a private dermatologist. I've made an appointment with my doctor to see a dermatologist on NHS, however I wanted to know if there was something I can do in the mean time. I was wondering if anyone has any info on following products:

Neem tree
Tea tree oil
Lava soap
Phisohex body wash
hydrocortisone cream

I'm aware that I should take some treatment for my nose as the infection can be carried there, but assume I can only get this on prescription. I really want to be able to do something to help outside of prescribed meds from the doc.

Thanks guys

I have a bad case of folliculitis. I have had it progress over 10 years and now is unbearable. I have had fungal stains, biopsies and cultures with no pathogens found. The biopsy came back as folliculitis and the doctors I have seen can't understand whats going on. I have had an aids test done in the last year which came back negative. I do well with antibiotics, but as soon as I go off them, due to the side affects, it comes back within a week. The sores on my head are a mix of small pimple and large, deep, puss filled boil that are very painfull and create bald spots on me head. I have tried changing my diet to rule out food allergies, but after one week it seemed it just got worse from the diet change. I am curious as to how much stress affects the condition as I have been experiencing more stress than ever the last few years and my condition has worsened over the same period.

Perifolliculitis capitis abscedens et suffodiens.

Rifampin, Keflex, Accutane - What is best?

Perifolliculitis capitis abscedens et suffodiens.

I'm one of the rare people with this disease. I've had it for almost 15 years. It is getting progressively worse. I'm am starting to get bald spots again. When the pressure and pain is too bad, I go back on antibiotics since there is no cure. Keflex and Rifampin together seems to work well. 500 mg each twice daily.

Has anyone else had good experience with treatments or good websites. I have received another recommendation for Accutane.

I have a granuloma on the back of my head. I've had it for about 3 years now. I think I want to get it cut out, but I'm not sure about the scar. The size fluctuates up and down, but mostly up.

Does anyone else have a problem? Any new suggestions?

Just in case you didn't see it in the other thread. They are so similar that I wasn't sure which one to post in.
