Hair loss as drug side effect

My hairline has been thinning over the past few months (and my scalp burns)and I'm beginning to think it's due to my meds. I take 400mg of Lamictal a day.

For those of you who have experienced medication-related hair loss, has the hair grown back once you stopped taking it? Any advice besides taking selenium, zinc, magnesium, and using Niotin shampoo?

I'm only 33 and a woman and this is very scary to me.

Thanks.

alopecia as a drug side-effect

Few drugs cause alopecia
One such drug is pentosan polysulfate used for interstitial cystitis (4% frequency)
Lamictal is reported to be associated with a frequency of alopecia ranging from 1/100 to 1/1000 patients see PDR

Hair loss as drug side effect

Altavista,

I take Lamictal and am also having "hair breakage" close to the follicle. The woman who cuts my hair says that it is an internal issue that could be caused by my meds. The first time she cut my hair, she asked me if I had lost a significant amount of weight recently, had major health issues or if anything else was going on. I eat very well and take care of myself. I have no major health issues - besides taking meds. Do you take other meds in addition to Lamictal? I take a few other meds, so it could be the interaction of all of them or just the fact that I have so many synthetic compounds in my body that may interfere with keratin production.

RFD,
Could hair loss be caused by an intestinal parasite? The woman also suggested that it could be caused by swimming in the Pacific Ocean off the coast of Costa Rica, or from something else in Costa Rica - like a parasite - because coincidentally another woman she sees that has had similar symptoms also had been to Costa Rica in the past couple of years. I have intermittent GI problems, so this might make sense. What do you think?

hair loss due to drug side effect

I have been prescribed "Divalproex Sodium" and one of the side effects is hair loss. I have been on the drug for about 4 months and it has helped my disorder...unfortunately I am experiencing extreme hair loss.

I have been taking choline, Inositol, Methione, selenium, zinc picolinate, kelp, nettle, mega doses of B's, protein and Nioxin shampoo and conditioners.

I'm so grateful to have this forum to express my feelings about the hair loss. I was at the hospital today and expressed my fear of going bald. A scary prospect for a women (or for this woman). And the nurse's attitude was dismissive...to say the least.

I felt foolish and depressed because I felt that I was helpless. I've always liked solving problems that I've had and so far this hair loss problem has been the most challenging. I've come up with so many dead ends....(no pun intended).

Anyway I am determined to keep trying to find a solution.

In the meantime thankyou for having this forum so that I could feel that I'm not foolish and I'm not alone.

dh
